Today there was a ceremony welcoming the Champions League trophy to London.

Why would it have left England - Chelsea won it last season?

I am only guessing but maybe whoever the holders are have to give it back to EUFA at a certain date so they can check it is not damaged, and to clean it up and make it spick and span.

Then later they can have the "hand over" ceremony, like today where Chelsea officially "give" it back to EUFA.
It was marking the end of Chelsea's year of holding it, and the "handing over" of it, presumably back to UEFA for this year's winner.

Those explanations sound good - thanks guys
Also the final is at Wembley. If it had been abroad, maybe the ceremony would have taken place in the host city?
