If the 1966 final had been a draw after extra time what would have happened?

Penalties? A replay?

The match rules for the 1966 final stipulated that if the scores were level after 30 minutes Extra Time that a replay would take place at Wembley Stadium 1930 BST Tuesday 2nd August.

I believe there'd have been a replay. The first international tournament to be decided on penalties was ten or so years later.
Not 100 % sure, but I think there would have been a replay.
They used to have to replay cup finals ( FA and League ) when there was a draw after extra time.

A bit more difficult arranging a World Cup Final replay though.

How many days rest would they need before doing it all again?
Then there's all the hotels, flights etc.
Penalty shoot outs were introduced to the World Cup knockout stages in 1978 but none were needed. The first was in the 1982 semi-final between France and Germany which finished 3-3 after 120 minutes. Germany won 5-4 on penalties.
Hopkirk, if the final was on a Saturday then the replay would have most likely been on the Wednesday.

If there was no space in the hotels, perhaps each England player could have taken a German home, and let him use the spare bedroom.
Maybe Three Lions would never be written?
A good question Hopkirk. We don't hear enough about the 1966 world cup.

Who won?
There are people on the pitch. They think it's all over. It is now !!!
In the 1958 World Cup Finals Northern Ireland were involved in a replay against Czechoslovakia after the two sides finished level in the group stages. The Czechs had a massively superior goal difference but it mattered not. A replay it was. And we won :-)
Those were the days
And ah yes, the double-myth of the 1966 World Cup Final: the ball crossed the line and the Russian linesman flagged for a goal. Except the ball evidently didn't cross the line ... and the linesman wasn't Russian either :-)
