Is It Just Me?

While the news this week was full of the story about the Hillsborough disaster, was it just me that thought about the victims of the Heysel stadium disaster? 39 Juventus fans died and 600 were injured - all caused by Liverpool fans.
If there are any Liverpudlians reading this, you will probably hate me for saying this, but it seems Liverpudlians are always the victims and never to blame.

were there zillions of reports all flawed, costing millions ?
did the people who were employed to protect the fans, instead decide to incriminate them ?
of one report did the justice minister comment - " I am absolutely certain that the judge ( stuart smith ) got this wrong " ?

I think the Heysel disaster was better handled by the authorities ....

nonetheless the Hillborough event was marked by
perjury. cover up and lying .....
and also I have to say insensitive handling of the relatives

that is ,my opinion - but it is backed up by abundant evidence ....

Hillsborough was an unfortunate chain of events..triggered by poor decision making by the SYP regarding crowd control..no "fans" were to "blame"..the tragedy was the cover up , lying and failure to accept responsibility for the subsequent tragedy by SYP

Peter, yes I agree that the investigation at Hillsborough was a scandalous cover up and the families of victims are to be applauded for their tenacity and have every right to celebrate the new inquest verdict, but it seems to me that the message conveyed is that ALL Liverpool fans are perfect angels at football matches

there you are "thinking" about bereaved parents who have lost their children in an avoidable disaster
and there you are saying that they are casting themselves as eternal victims

The Heysel disaster was dealt with quite rapidly, mrs o, despite one or two delays. Arrests were made, people were charged with manslaughter and dealt with summarily. Appeals against lenient sentences were heard and upheld, with some sentences being extended.
Compare that with Hilsborough where lie upon lie was told, statements were altered, sections of the media swallowed everything the police told them as true and the lives of hundreds of people were virtually put on hold for 27 years.
I don't think for one minute that anyone is suggesting that ALL Liverpool fans are perfect angels - every club has it's 'hooligan' element - but the weight of evidence in this instance supports the claim that lies were told from the start in an effort to put the blame on those arriving late for the game.
Both were tragedies; Heysel was caused almost entirely by hooligans, Hillsborough was not.

Sandy, yes I remember that.

I also remember Liverpool denying that their fans were to blame at Heysel, yet even a blind man could watch TV and see they were behaving worse than animals and most definitely WERE to blame.

In my very clumsy way I am trying to say that Liverpool as a city stick together when mourning their own, which is commendable, but they also stick together when denying responsibility for their wrongs, which I find abhorrent.

As I said in my reply at 09.38, the families of the Hillsborough disaster are to be applauded for their tenacity and deserve to celebrate. There was a disgraceful cover up by the authorities and I hope there are prosecutions
