Ok fabulous final, and I am sure there were thousands if not millions watching who are not regular football fans but why on earth didn't the commentators tell us how many penalties were to be taken and how many were needed to win? Why do they assume prior knowledge of the game just like they do with tennis or cricket finals? Anyone not knowing would possibly assume that they all get to take one and if equal at the end they start again - the amount scored/missed doesn't make any sense.

I haven't seen the end of this yet, just at extra time. So I'll get off this thread.
I thought it quite obvious that it’s the best of 5, to start with. The indicator was at the bottom of the screen.
Take 5, and if still equal, sudden death. Bit if after 3 each the score is 3-0 then little point in continuing.
I think it's reasonable to think that anyone watching the final would know how many penalties were being taken, or at least be watching with someone who did.

Plus, during the shootout, there's a graphic on the screen showing five goes each (highlighted in green or red depended on whether the pen was scored or not).

Best of five has never been mentioned!
*But
If they all score or are equal after the first five penalties, then it goes to what is called Sudden death, different players from each side take them until some misses or a save. equal amounts are taken though.
Some say it was a Messi finish to a game.
It was on the screen,Lankeela
There is a display on the screen the whole time telling you what is happening. What is so difficult?

Then what the hell are the commentators being paid for if its not to tell us what is going on? Fair enough on normal football programmes with virtually all football fans but for a world cup final showing to millions around the world who may never watch another football match ever a bit of explanation of what is going on would help.
"Best of five has never been mentioned! " - because it's not the best of five.

Too busy watching them taking them to be looking at the graphics on the screen which I wouldn't know were there or what they meant unless I was a regular tv football fan.
"Then what the hell are the commentators being paid for if its not to tell us what is going on? " - Well I assume they'd hoped eyesight and literacy would be enough for most.

Cloverjo said it was best of five!

So if watching Crufts on TV would you know how many CCs a dog needs to be champion?
"I wouldn't know were there or what they meant unless I was a regular tv football fan. " - You don't have to be a football fan to read words and numbers and assimilate graphics.
//So if watching Crufts on TV would you know how many CCs a dog needs to be champion?//

If there was a display on the screen telling me, yes I would.
It's not best of 5. Both sides take up to 5 if they are equal after then its' sudden death.
Not for the first time I ponder why medical science doesn't take blood samples from injured footballers to understand and harness their remarkable regenerative processes.

Deaths door to 100 metres champion in seconds.

Cheating fairies.
