No no no, Dave.
The idea of having to carry "papers" and produce them on demand is not sometthing hos country should countenance.
"With so many immigrants the authorities need to know precisely who they are dealing with at any unusual incident."
And how would ID cards achieve that?
Come to that, what would such a scheme achieve?
"It wouldn't extend any extra "control" over the vast majority of us who DO already carry sufficient forms of ID."
So what would it achieve?
As you say, those who need ID for (say) driving, travel etc. already have it. I would support an ID scheme for those who had none of those things and wanted something. I would not support a compulsory scheme and most certainly would not support anything which made the carrying of ID compulsory.
I have ID sufficient for my needs and I only carry it and produce it when required (if I'm driving or travelling). I do not expect to have to identify myself when walking down the High Street in the UK.
