Can a referee show a player a yellow then a red card for the same incident?

If a player commits a foul (yellow card) then hits his opponent (straight red card) BEFORE the referee has had a chance to deal with the incident, what should the referee do?

Should he show a single red card for the more serious offence or show a yellow then a red card for two offences?
