I seem to remember that Cheers (ridden by Geraldine Rees) collapsed and died through exhaustion shortly after the race. A lot of people expressed concerns at the time, stating it was Rees' desire to be the first woman to finish the race, that made her keep the horse going, when more experienced jockeys may have pulled the horse up.
