The above won the 2001 world championship high-jump.
My question is, how would we spell his surname in English.
I worked in Germany(he's German) but I can't recall that 'squiggle'.

that's a "scharfes" s - it can be spelled (and pronounced) "ss".

Thank-you Mushroom. It must be 'Buss' then. I looked at lots of references on google and they all gave that squiggle(scharfe).
I'm surprised you did not encounter "eszett" whilst in Germany because it is still in common usage, especially so after the 1996 spelling reform of German.

You can type the ß on your word processor if you hold down Alt then enter 993 on your numeric keypad.
Svejk - if you worked in Germany you must have seen the road signs for 'pedestrians', i.e. "Fußgänger".
I always mucked up me umlauts...........
