Epsom Derby Weekend

Another year another Oaks and Derby. I think all involved are going to be wet and warm. The crowd is liable to need buckets of water sluiced over them never mind the horses. Have had a little punt today including the Oaks and am seriously drawn to Dettori's mount in tomorrows Derby. Not often he rides for the Aga Khan and the wily Dermot Weld. The stable jockey for Weld, Pat Smullen, is currently unable to ride whilst he battles cancer but has been giving Frankie the lowdown on Hazapour. Todays vain attempt below.

Playing with bookies money today, Togo. Had both General Brook (25/1) and Maypole (13/2) as first 2 legs of a lucky 15 and e.w. acca, yesterday. Looked at the Cash Out offer after Maypole had won and accepted the near £300, backing the 2 remaining horses (Lord Murphy and Herm) in another bet. Both boiled, so i won one for a change :-)

I have never got excited by the Derby - just one of those things, i suppose- and i very rarely have a punt in it. Much prefer the 20+ handicaps :-/

The times I have hovered over the cash out option and never taken it. Mind, I have never had that sort of dosh waved under my nose, so would probably be tempted if it happened. Like you with the Derby to some extent, many a year has seen me not bother. I am a bit intrigued though with this years field and feel that Saxon Warrior is a bit short priced, especially with the no1 stall to overcome. They are talking Triple Crown in the rags but he is no Nijinski. The others were before my time :))

To be totally honest, Togo, had my 2 winners been priced around the 7/1 mark, i wouldn't have even bothered looking at the 'Cash Out' offer. I took 20s on the first and though i believed it had a great shout for a place, i never actually thought it would win. As you say, the near £300 was too good to ignore.
And i see my fav trainer has just won the first at Epsom - and i backed against it!!

Yeah Marie's Diamond bombed. Should have taken note that it had never won at 6f. That company is too hot to be trusting to getting 6. Just had the most almighty thunderstorm and downpour here for about 45 minutes. Now the sun is out and it is steaming like Malaya. Have to cover the last 3.

Up early and sorted this morning. Got on early to take B.O.G. If I get the dreaded N.R. I will just put in a substitute. I have picked, for now, from the first 4 races at Epsom but not placed a "single" bet but may do so to qualify for a "free" bet in the Derby. I will see how these pan out before deciding on any further strategic thinking.

Morning, Togo, and good luck with your selections. As if it wasn't hard enough to pick winners on a Saturday, my fav trainer, Mr Fahey, sends a handful down to Epsom (using different riders for each) but sends his 2 top jocks elsewhere! Very hard to 2nd guess the man and i don't know what to read of it. Is he saying that Hanagan and Hamilton have better chances on their Musselburgh/Doncaster rides than they would have riding those down at Epsom? Having puzzled over this conundrum for some time, i've left them alone - bar one - and have settled, instead, for those horses attempting to win their races for the 2nd year running (Caspian Prince is actually going for his 4th win in the 3.45!). Would have had Sovereign Debt in there, too, but the non-runner has reduced the field to just 7, so i've gone to Muss for the other.

Gollob; Neither Togo nor myself profess to be big hitters. If you have read any of our Saturday posts, you will see that we stake what we can easily afford so the multiple bets are right up our street - a cheap bet with the chance (albeit a slim one) of a healthy return.
As for tipping the odds on fav to win the big race, O'Brien won with his least likely runner last year @ 40/1, so anyone with the wherewithal to do such bets may be better off taking the 4/6 for any of O'Brien's horses to lead them home.

You have certainly gone through the "field" there Ken. You must hit something for sure. I note that Jamie Spencer has elected to ride up at Doncaster in the absence of a decent Derby mount, as do Atzeni, Lee, Crowley and Cosgrove. Be interesting to see whether it pays off for him.
