Who or what is a "bluenose"?
I have been reading in the sports pages this morning (June 17th 2011) about the likelihood of Alex McLeish becoming the Aston Villa manager. In the article, reference is made to him being a "bluenose" but no explanation or definition is forthcoming. It appears in Jim White's column in the Daily Telegraph. Could anyone please explain the meaning.
On a slightly different slant, is it just me or has the sports section of the Telegraph become a shadow of its former self? Its coverage of some sports has become very poor, even some cricket, including international test matches, are not reported on. Can anyone suggest an alternative newspaper that has a wide comprehensive cover of all sports and is not 80% soccer and which preferably, does without an astrology page!?

Can't offer any advice re the newspaper Vimto however:
According to Webster's Dictionary: Bluenose;
n.- one who attempts to impose his or her
moral code upon others.
In other words: A purtianical person who
tries to dominate your way of life by forcing
THEIR way of life down your throat.
An aggressive prude that engages in censorship,
behaves like a puritain, and condemns you as
if they were a religious zealot.
--------------------------------------------
Also a slang term for Glasgow Rangers supporters due to their over inflated pride in being (apparently) protestant and hugely anti catholic.

Hope this helped a little Vimto :)

Bluenose was a Canadian fishing and racing schooner from Nova Scotia built in 1921. She was later commemorated by a replica Bluenose II built in 1963. A celebrated racing ship and hard-working fishing vessel, Bluenose became a provincial icon for Nova Scotia as well as important Canadian symbol in the 1930s. The name "bluenose" originated as a nickname for Nova Scotians from as early as the late 18th century.
