cricket caddies

hi, was just listening to the radio about the ongoing row between rory mcilroy and some 5 live presenter about comments the latter made about the former' caddy. Rory said that his caddy had got him from being in the top 200 to being as good as he is now, and the journo had critisized the caddy for not reading the course well or somesuch thing.

Anyway, what do caddies do? I really thought they just lumped the equipment around!

I don't watch or play golf but I think they work out the distances and advise on which club to use

They probably can but sometimes need someone to bounce ideas off (and blame when things go wrong!). Maybe caddies also work out wind direction and speeds too. And hold their balls for them.
