The old track at Nottingham closed in the 70's but a new one was built at Colwick Park near the race course It opened in January 1980 if I remember correctly
The Stow (Walthamstow) shut down about 4 or 5 years ago to be redeveloped. It's still waiting to be redeveloped although many locals would like to see the track back.
IMO all greyhound stadiums should be closed down. The majority of racing greyhounds are not treated very well at all. They sleep on newspaper and have no comfort at all. Then when their racing days are over, they are often put to sleep or they go to rescue kennels. I have a rescue greyhound, he is the most lovely dog, very placid, excellent with the cats, and all he wants is short walks, food and sleep.I have had him since he was 3 years old, he is now 11.
Poole's Stadium ceased to do greyhound in 1990 to makeway for a larger football pitch but was re-introduced in 1994 and is very popular, I have never been myself but live opposite and the traffic and parking on race nights horrendous.
Agreed about Harringay closing in 1987, it is now a Sainsbury's Supermarket. Harringay Greyhound racing used to be a part of the ITV Seven on World Of Sport during the 70's and 80's when Horse Racing was abandoned.
Blackburn Greyhound Stadium - been a Tesco since 1982.
Remember drivi ng past late one night when it was still in action, and a greyhound with a number on went pelting across two lanes of traffic- followed at a bit of a distance by its owner. Often wonder if he ever caught it
