Not only is it spoiling things - if you listen closely, the whoops and screams are all the same level, for the same length of time - which is utterly unlike a spontanious reaction from a live audience.
This nonsense is dubbed on afterwards in production, making it doubly unbearable - not only does it distract from the experience of the programme, it is cynically put on and is not real.
Hopefully, this dreadful trend - along with intrusive background music - will fade away like the useless annoying fad it is.

Quite often in the States I`ve watched chat shows where the camera has been on the audience and it has accidently panned too close to the stage. They have big telepromps saying "cheer", "clap", "scream" etc to tell the audience what to do. There are also paid members in the audience who lead the way with the screaming. If you look closely at the end credits you can see reference to it. I suspect Strictly and X Factor type shows are starting to employ the same tactics.

It's crazy - do the producers not have faith in their show, that they think the audience at home need aural pointers to advise people that shomething important is happening - even if it's only a high note, or someone twirling about a bit!!!
They should take a leaf out of the book used by the producers of MASH - first series used 'canned' laughter, then they wised up and dropped it,, relying on the intelligence of the audience to see the humour, and poignancy for themselves, and it remains one of the most watched TV shows ever made.
