Passed the ball to set up goal? Try to stop that. (6) I have d-f-n- which suggests defend or define. But I can't see a rationale for either. Can someone put me out of my misery please?

Thank you so much! As ever, once it is explained, it seems so obvious! I found it very frustrating because I have been close to despair for the last three weeks when I came nowhere near to finishing. Then, this week, after a slow start, it clicked into place. Except for this one clue. Ah me, I'll get there one day.
