Who the hell were those four "singers" who ruined Abide with Me at the F.A. cup final last night. They were absolutely awful and there rendition of the Natioanal anthem wasn't much better.I know the days of the man in a white suit on top of a platform have long gone but surely this was just a step too far.

I agree, it was dire. I don't know who they were butthey didn't get the crowd going did they. I still cried though. There's something about that song that gets to me.
David Webb and his quartet apparently.
From Plymouth.

That's all I found.

(Forgot to drag the link over, sorry)
(excuse me, grumpy01)

good morning alba
Fully agree grumpy, it was such a let down. No feeling, no participation from the crowd. Normally that gets the hairs on the back of my neck up but yesterday I was very disappointed.
They were awful weren't they! We muted the TV until they finished.
Morning Excel x

Just regoogled 'singer at FA Cup Final 11 May 2013' and the thing's disappeared. Blast.
It was a quartet called Amore I think.
Yes I must agree, they murdered it.The worst Abide With Me I have ever heard.

Not everyone's cup of tea but I thought Emeli Sand'e did a pretty good version.

Abide With Me also featured in the 1953 film Shane starring Alan Ladd
Amazing how time flies. It is 50 years since Arthur Caiger, ‘the man in the white suit’, last took to the rostrum at the old Wembley Stadium.
Amore are usually extremely good - I'm sure it was the sound system which failed, you couldn't even hear the start of the hymn. What a shame for them to be blamed.
It was very poor. I abhor the recent trend where every such occasion has to have some sort of classical or operatic spin put on it.

Why should a passionate crowd need to be 'led' in anything?
That said, I thought the fans could have made a bit more of an effort. As a kid, it was the one part of FA Cup Final day that my Dad loved and I grew to view it the same way.
Despite my atheist views, it's a great song that transcends all the usual vitriolic disagreements between opposing fans and is one of the few heartening aspects of such a tribal atmosphere, seeing both sets of supporters joining in a common bond on one of the best days in the British sporting calendar.
My cat could do better and he's been under the sod for 4 years! No matter how bad it is though, it still makes me sniff, the same thing happens with Land of My Fathers before Wales play.
Why do there need to be so many people on the pitch for the singing? Ninety years ago, they needed a man on a white horse to clear the pitch!
So the answer to your question is: that's Amore !
Couldn't agree more that it was a terrible rendition of Abide With Me and I was another that turned the volume down. Having said that, the visual element was saved by the sight of the wonderful cleavage on the singer in the beige(?) dress. Even the cameraman moved in for a sly close up!
