It is in fact officially "The Open". Often referred to as the "British Open" because that's what it is effectively. Personally, I think of it as the British Open also, but some people do get very funny about it :-)
There already IS a golf competition called "the Scottish Open". It happened at Castle Stuart in Scotland last week and was won by Phil Mickelson. The upcoming one is THE Open, simple as that.
As it is "The Open" it presumably can continue to be played in Scotland in future.
As such it is is referendum-proof :-)
Also it will hopefully return to its rightful home of Portrush one day, in which case the title "The Open" will be acceptable to both loyalists and nationalists with any luck (!)
I'm supporting Mr McIlroy but I fear his thoughts may lie elsewhere .. :-)
The Royal and Ancient (Golf Club of St Andrews)...clearly in Scotland...decides precisely WHERE The Open is to be played every year. Consequently - barring some grotesquely unimaginable upheaval in the golf world - that decision will always be made in Scotland.
