The Oxford boat sank in 1951 !.

There have been SIX sinkings in the history of the race so far (2013). Cambridge went down in 1859 and 1978. Oxford sank in 1925. In these three sinkings the race was one by the boat that stayed afloat. On March 31 1912, BOTH crews sank, but the race was rescheduled for the following day. In 1951 (as we saw above) Oxford sank; re-rowed on the following Monday.

Cambridge for me as it was aligned more to my interests in physical geography, though extremely theoretical and mathematical. I grew closer to that as I advanced through my degrees. Oxford was far more historical, sociological and regional based, not my cup of tea academically. Over the years, I came to know Oxford far better, Oxford as a city and university - even to the point of that I have been involved in one of their schools. School-wise, the 'natural' linkage was Cambridge, the Master of St Johns a governor of the school.
