Being from the UK i don't know much about Ice Hockey. One thing i do know however is that the players beat the sh#t out of one another during the game. Do the fights have any affect on the outcome of the game? Such as point deductions etc.? And why is it that they are allowed to fight? Not saying i disagree with the fighting, just wondering what part it holds in the sports history.

I don't believe they are allowed, but it is traditional ;-)
Depends on the severity of the fights, if it's a bit of handbags 2 minutes for roughing can become 2+2 if necessary. In the UK leagues dropping the gloves for a fight is currently 5 minute penalty plus 10 minute misconduct. In the NHL it's a 5 minute penalty.... it's penalised but it's an accepted part of the game. Whne you play a game as aggressive as hockey it happens
