I thought what a wonderful gesture was made yesterday at all the UK football matches.
Thousands of football supporters standing in respect to the recorded French anthem .
Some mouthed the words, some actually sang the words. They all cheered and applauded at the conclusion.
These surely are not the same knuckledragging EDL and BNP supporters that have been described frequently by an ABer who lumps them all together.
I bet they would stand and sing the English National Anthem as well when required. Shame Mr Corbyn didn't learn the words. Not a football fan perhaps.

In an article this week's Focus magazine, the estimable Hamad Abdel-Samad reports on the disgrace of the Turkish national team standing in muted defiance. This is a country eager to join the EU, folks.

Oh for gods sake. Thanks for the English lessons by one and all. I don't know why I bother. I have been corrected once for which I am grateful. I haven't forgotten in the space of several minutes thanks.
'God's' with an apostrophe retro. ;-)

Thanks for your opinion on this subject. :-)
Retro in a way I'm sorry I mentioned it. By no way did I mean to be spelling police, I actually thought it was mildly amusing and a tad ironic because of the subject matter. Please don't get het up (I believe the other comment was from someone who hadn't read the previous replies).

Prudie,
There are a lot of discussion, topics etc that I find amusing or annoying but I generally would not say I am offended. BUT I do find the word sweatie offensive! By using it in a stupid way I hope that the people will see how stupid it is an stop.

Don't worry Prudie.Your correction was fine. It need not of been repeated by another. I have had stick elsewhere today which was a sideways stab and
totally unwarranted but very snitty and cowardly all the same.

I thought you'd misspelt sweetie! ;-)
I'll confess I see this word on AB only and I have no idea what it means or where it comes from. Probably best not to enlighten me.

Too late correcting online what should have been taught in the classroom.

I was at a Premier League match yesterday and although expecting it, I struggled to join in. The music started and the words came up on a screen, but we had no idea where we were or what we were singing about. The minute's silence was well respected and much more appropriate, as was the friendly supportive nature of the triple banked stewards who managed our safety.
maydup you are probably better off not knowing what La Marseilles is about . Its a horrible anthem about the 'unpure' blood of enemies flowing in gutters...
It was not needed, it should've stopped after the England v France match.

What's next week, the Mali national anthem?, nah thought not

Flowery scots or something similar!
@ Douglas first verse loose translation:

Arise children of the fatherland
The day of glory has arrived
Against us tyranny's
Bloody standard is raised.
Listen to the sound in the fields
The howling of these fearsome soldiers
They are coming into our midst
To cut the throats of your sons and women

To arms citizens Form your battalions
March, march
Let impure blood
Water our furrows ( or soak our fields)

then it gets worse....lol!

Question Author
Nah. It gets better. Stirs the heart.
