I am not a football fan but I loved the reception Iceland gave to their team. When did this co-ordinated clapping come into use? A lot of teams at the Euros seem to use it. Thanks.

The Icelanders have, in discussions and interviews, acknowledged that when sometime in the past an Icelandic team played a game against Motherwell the latter's supporters had a routine which the Icelanders have in part copied and then modified - they have definitely (unofficially) "thanked" Motherwell's supporters for the idea.

I was fascinated by the Icelandic crowd clapping and making a grunting sound while their team played .
The commentator of their last match suggested that it actually originated in Scotland. And i'm almost sure he said that fans of Motherwell (?) have been using it for some time. I stand to be corrected.
