Small 'box' On The Back Of Ride London Cyclists

there seems to be a small box in the middle of the back of the cyclists. i think i have seem them on rugby as well.

any ideas?

thanks for that, but they still have a box on their backs. could that be a team transponder rather than an official one

It is for gathering 'telemetric' data.
The team coaches/medics/trainers are constantly updated with a sports(wo)man's personal performance data during the course of an 'event'. Hence why you see the 'officials' at a Rugby match with a bank of laptops, etc.
