Since 2014, F1 has operated a totting up procedure for driving offences with penalty points added to Super Licences when stewards believe a punishable offence has been committed on track , by a driver

Therefore one can only assume that the stewards deemed him to have committed a punishable offence on track , which warranted points (as well as the time penalty )
