So one sided, not even a match and lasted less than an hour.
Congratulations to Halep but how can these women command the same salary as men?

Stand by for NJ's now customary annual rant :-) //Anyway, opinion polls say that Womens tennis is FAR more popular with TV viewers than 'Mens' .// Need some evidence, Eddie. In any case, the easiest way to deal with that is to stage the two events at different times. Then see how many bums on seats you get for each and how much the TV companies are willing to shell...

I agree with Saint Peter. If women want to be considered equal and paid as such in any given work they must do an equal amount! If you do less you get paid less. Simple!
most of the comments on here are complete rubbish. Around 2000 tournaments are played round the world in a year and only the 4 grand slams are played over 5 sets for the men. Then for the ladies it surely as hard for them to get to the top as they have to train just as hard as the men to get to the top
//Prize money has never been based on time spent on court, …//

No it hasn’t Jim. And that’s where the problems begin. Your comments about exceptional circumstances don’t stack up. You need to look at an entire tournament of 254 matches to get a proper representative picture. There will always be relatively long women’s matches and always relatively short men’s matches. But overall the men are providing > 60% of the entertainment (leaving aside quality).

//There have been more than a few very one-sided men’s finals.
Such as last year for example.
The perennial carping is sad but hopefully irrelevant.//

I’m not talking simply about the finals, Ickky. The equality in pay and inequality in entertainment persists across all seven rounds.

//Then for the ladies it surely as hard for them to get to the top as they have to train just as hard as the men to get to the top.//

Yes it is. But see my earlier comment.
"...only the 4 grand slams are played over 5 sets for the men."

And it is only the 4 Grand Slams for which we are highlighting the inequality meted out to the different genders.

Same maximum number of sets playable, same prize money. What is so hard to comprehend.

(BTW, let's also throw out the discriminatory 10 minute heat break allowed to female players but denied to males).
Maybe we should look at whether either sex is providing any value for money. The ball tends to be only in play for 16.4% of the total match time, so there's awful lot of faffing and resting going on.
the pre match discussion by the 'panel of experts' lasted longer than the match ...

I agree with equal rights, if two people do the exact same job, whether male or female, they should get the same reward.
This is not equal!
Women would be up in arms if two people, one male and one female, did the same job of work and were paid the same salary, but the female worked for 40 hours a week and the male worked only 30 hours!
You can be as PC as you like about mens/womens tennis and equal pay etc but until the ladies serve up(no pun intended) on a regular basis a similar match to the epic we witnessed this afternoon, the general public know that in reality it's not even vaguely fair to equate the two.
