Snooker Question

Are there any snooker fans out there that know the rules for this scenario.

A player drops the rest onto the table and scatters the balls, the ref calls a foul against that player, can his opponent play the balls as they have been left due to the dropped 'rest', or does the ref have to put the balls back in the position they were in before the foul.

i imagine that the opponent would have the choice to play the balls as they had been left but i'm not sure

In that catastrophic situation which has happened to me lol, I would have thought that the offender would forfeit the frame.

I'd have thought the balls would remain as they ended up. They only have the option of replacing them if a miss is called and the opponent puts the player who fouled back in.

My take - it would be called a foul same as if the striker had brushed a ball with his cue. No replacing balls - opponent can play or put the offender back in.

the balls would remain as they rest. The in coming player can then choose to play or put the opponent back in.

If the striker has not played his shot prior to dropping the rest his opponent has the choice of playing the next shot himself (from where the balls finish up) or asking the striker to play again either from where the balls end up or from where they were prior to the foul. If the striker has played his shot before dropping the rest (as in the Mark Allan clip) the opponent has the option of playing the next shot from where the balls end up or asking his opponent to do likewise. There is no option in these circumstances to have the balls replaced. (Rule 10(i))

of course, the skill is to have total control over the cue ball so that you never need to use the rest . . .
