If we beat Croatia by two goals, our goal difference will be zero.
If England beats the Czechs only by one goal, the Czechs' goal difference will be better than ours still and we'd both have four points.
I think that's right, anyway...

Just found this on the UEFA website.
"Czech Republic will go through as group winners if they avoid defeat against England. They will finish second if they lose and Scotland beat Croatia. They will only finish third if they lose and Croatia win by enough to overtake them on overall goal difference.
England will go through if they draw or if Scotland do not win, and will finish top if they beat Czech Republic. They will only finish third if they lose and Scotland win by enough to overtake them on overall goal difference.
Croatia must win to stay in contention to be at least a best third-placed team, though they can still overtake Czech Republic for second place on overall goal difference.
Scotland must win to finish at least third, and can still overtake England for second place on overall goal difference."

The Scots may just have done England a big favour by drawing the match. If England beat the Czechs, we win the group and will face the 2nd place team in Group F - either France or Germany. If we draw against Czech, we face the 2nd placed team in Group E - probably Sweden. I know the Swedes are terribly difficult opponents but i'd much rather we face them than France or Germany at the 1st round knock-out stage. Mind you, we would then face either Germany or France in the QF.
Every time there is a major tournament, we get the usual hype and bull about how England can win it. I've seen nothing from England so far to suggest any such thing. One pass forward, two back. One forward, two back. They might qualify for the knock-out stages but the evidence suggests just that for England - knocked out.
As for Scotland. Here is a national team that can only fully motivate itself when England are the opposition. And in the words of Alex Ferguson, that means they're "cheating the manager".

//@23.05.I take it you are not a football fan then,NJ.//
Correct. I used to love the game. I was a Spurs' season ticket holder for five years and for three of those years I scarcely missed a match - home or away. I used to live about a mile from Arsenal's ground and about three from Tottenham. The reason for my loyalty when Arsenal was closer was family history. I fell out of love with the game when mass imports of foreign players and managers took centre stage (ironically Spurs were among the pioneers of that with Ossie Ardilles and Ricky Villa from Argentina) and when they stopped playing with five forwards. Then the ridiculous salaries took over (funded by ludicrous payments from Sky) and the game is now frequented by overpaid mediocrities with an unusually high number of cheats among them. England are unlikely to field a competitive international team whilst its top flight is staffed by players who are not eligible to play for it.
The calculations mentioned earlier this morning about who will qualify and who will not is indicative of the preposterous nature of this type of competition. The only things missing from the calculations are your grandmother's birthday and whether there is an 'R' in the month. It should be played as a knockout competition with teams drawn from the hat as per the FA Cup - if you win you're through, if you lose you're out.
One thing that should definitely be imposed is a ban on showing football on TV in public places. There are specific laws in place to control the behaviour of fans attending football stadiums but all bets are off if those same fans take their fanaticism to the streets or pubs. The disgraceful scenes in London yesterday by fans who had travelled from Scotland would not have been so prevalent had there been nowhere for them to watch the match. Instead the authorities allowed a big screen to be erected in Trafalgar Square. Quite why they did this is anybody's guess but they deceived the public by saying if was for "key workers - that worked well. Football fans should either be watching it in the stadium (though personally I believe there is a case for holding all matches behind closed doors) or at home on their own TVs. I'm afraid it caused far too much inconvenience to normally sane people to be allowed to be shown in public.
