Musical one today. The Neil Diamond song, Cracklin Rosie is actually about Rose Wine. Diamond got the idea from a story about an Indian tribe in Canada who had more men than women. On Saturday nights the guys without a girl would get a bottle of "Cracklin Rose", that would be their date! The Chorus gives it away...."Cracklin Rose, you're a store bought woman,....." etc.

Why not listen to the man himself?

Yes, I did Tora :0)
Not about pork scratchings then.

That’s disappointing
I cant remember ever seeing native indians cultivating roses in any of the westerns.
I knew that that was one theory - the other is that the song is about a prostitute. Neil Diamond hasn't confirmed either.

Question Author
Barry, It seems he has confirmed the wine theory.
As Roy has shown, he did confirm it a long time ago. It was a fact I knew as my Husband shared quite a few drinks with him when he was in New York in the early seventies.
TTT, "Indian tribe"? I'll have you know that the correct description today is "First-Nation Community":)

I didn’t know that lol
Initially doubtful but now I'm a believer.
I knew that. And Sweet Caroline is Caroline Kennedy. And "I am, I said to no one there and no one heard at all not even the chair" is among the dumbest lyrics ever written.

LOL!
Bit before my time but Neil Diamond was, and still is my dads favourite singer, so he was always playing his songs at home lol.
Seems he later changed the story behind the inspiration Jno.

never trust a lyricist.
There ya go.
so embarrassing to admit you couldn't write a song about your wife because she had the wrong name, that it must be true.
Yes. :-)
