Too Late?
fresh sanctions have caused the ruble to plummet and has done huge damage to the russian economy.
my understanding was that most of the sanction options against russia had already been implimented? Why did they wait until now to do this? it seems that the democrats are only pulling their finger out now because they know trump will come to power in January and yank away all the support for ukraine.
what's the point in doing this now?

I can only assume they thought they were going to win the election and had more time.
It should all have been done a long time ago of course.
I think you are being a little premature, untitled. Trump may be after a deal, but he's not that stupid and will drive a hard bargain with Russia. He knows that he has to keep the rest of 'the West' on side if he wants them to support NATO and enable the USA to remain a member without them paying most of the costs.
He will, I think, insist on Russia stipulating its limitations regarding land-grab. Probably saying something like 'Keep Crimea old mate'. Yes, I'm being flippant. Whatever one may think of Trump, he cares about the USA, he is a wheeler and dealer and he knows that Russia could spoil his plans.
Trump has not historically shown any interest at all in keeping the west "on side" jourdain... his first presidency frequently left american allies in the cold.
i think he will be far more concerned about keeping the republican party onside and that organisation is very hostile to supporting ukraine and has done everything it can to frustrate aid to that country. once they take control of the presidency that will be that.
