Why no mention of Frankie laine's death?

Today I heard a very brief announcement on radio 4 the very sad news that the great Frankie Laine has died at the age of nearly 94years. Since then I have tuned into television's Sky News, to see if there is any further coverage of this very sad event, so far not a mention. How is this so when a few weeks ago James Brown died, and there was excessive media coverage over his death? Even though this singer had in the past been arrested numourous time and goaled for Drugs, Guns, Auto Theft, and wife beating etc. Yet on the other hand Frankie Laine had led a squeaky clean life by comparison. He was an artist who was active from the late 40s until the 90s. Had 21 golden discs and world wide sales of 250 million discs, and held the number 1 spot for 18 weeks, with the hit I believe, and 27 weeks at No 1 for an artist in a single year. He also worked very hard for various charities at his own expense, and at one time gave a free concert for the supporters of Martin Luther King. He was also the first white artist to appear as a guest on the Nat King Cole TV Show, forgoing his usual salary of $10,000. It is a pity that the celebrities of today cannot emulate what Frankie has achieved in his lifetime. No today we have seen the passing of a very great man, and I do hope that at some time the media will pay the tribute to him that he richly deserves. R.I.P Frankie 1913 - 2007.

It was also reported in Metro this morning (London's biggest free newspaper).

The reason why James Brown was a bigger news story is because he was still a working artist when he died.

I know of Frankie Laine (I think 'I Believe' holds the record for most weeks at number one in the UK singles chart)...

...but it's not how well someone lives their lives which dictates the amount of coverage they get on their death...it's how newsworthy they are.

It's an ugly truism.

Thanks for those 3 web sites Gromit, they made very interesting reading. Let's hope that we will see some documentary featuring Franke Laine's career on TV. Taking into account how old he was, they have had plenty of time getting one prepared for his eventual death.

See what you mean about Sky News Gromit, it was breaking news this morning that an Chinook helicopter had gone down, but the stupid news presenter announced 'that the news had only just come in, but it looked serious'. What an understatement if ever there was one.

Strange though I cannot find anything else about this on any news sites.

Because of his chart record ('I Believe'), I guarantee that his death will be in the obits of The Times and Independent.

However, in terms of national consciousness, the people from 'his generation' who will really garner a lot of column inches (and I apologise for being vulgar by anticipating someone's demise) will be Vera Lynn and Norman Wisdom.

They, like Frankie Laine, have led blemish-free lives, but looking back from where we are now, they have a bigger 'footprint'.

I'll be honest...I didn't even know he was still alive, but his work was celebrated a few months back on CH4 when they did the run down of the top 100 selling singles of all time.

I Believe was in the top ten.

Frankie has been one of my favourites for years, i remember going to see him live with two mates about thirty years ago, he was old for a singer then, he was brilliant, i remember us walking down the street where we lived at about one thirty in the morning singing Rawhide, Moonlight Gambler, etc, happy days, RIP Frankie.
