Hi, we are about to go to The States with our children and will be staying in a fairly rural area. When we last went a couple of years ago I remember that it was really difficult to find something that they would drink apart from fruit juice. Neither of them drinks fizzy drinks. At home they drink mainly squash but we couldn't find bottles of squash in supermarkets. Were we looking for the wrong stuff? Does anyone know of something similar to ornage squash (or other flavours, they aren't fussy). I like them to drink lots in hot weather. Is "Koolaid" a type of squash? Advice appreciated!

I've never seen any type of squash in America either but Koolaid is similar except it comes in powder form but you can make a large bottle of it just by mixing water and it comes sugar free too.
Hi, I have the same problem when we go with our children too. I find that its easier to dilute the "florida orange juice" or juices in general. Koolaid and Tang( if they still sell it) is in powder form so you can make it as strong as you like but you may need to add sugar.
I cannot wait for BBW and Clanad to respond to this question. You guys make the USA sound like a third world country. Is it?
America has more of everything good and healthy than one can imagine. It also has an abundance of unhealthy food stuff. But it's up to individual to choose. Koolaid is junk.

Sorry, I wasn't for one moment suggesting that the States is a "3rd world country" (I thought that expression was dropped years ago), I was just asking if there was anything similar to squash or cordial. I know there are lots of foodstuffs that the UK doesn't have which other countries do, and vice versa. I was just trying to make sure my children don't become dehydrated. Thanks for those of you who responded helpfully, I think I'll stick with the watered down fruit juice.
You like them to drink lots in hot weather ?
When my kids were young the answer was simple .....tap..... .....water .
Much better for them than a load of sugary sweet squash.
Had the same problem over the pond with a relative - my white haired father!
We have found that just a spoonful of ready made drink like Oasis in water gives the same effect as those sligthly flavoured waters that cost silly prices. Personallly I'm not too fond of plain water but the flavoured stuff is good.

So my advice is to get the kids used to "flavoured water" before you go & then just a add a little of whatever you can find.
Shaney would you drink water all day every day for what i think is probably 2 weeks?

Sorry i can't help growbag been too long since i was lucky enough to be on that side of the pond. But i will ask my American friend when she comes on line.
Since I heard my name and since I haven't a clue as to what "Squash" is... Let me offer a good, cooling drink that all kids like (not knowing how healthy it is for them) is the bottled soft drink "Sprite" (available at all grocery stores, mixed half and half with a good quality orange juice... low sugar and no caffeine... (I'm in a hard-core rural area of the western U.S., we do have paved roads though...)

I'm an American. Once upon a time, I was a foreign exchange student to Australia. "Orange Squash" was a staple for my host family. I loved the stuff. Upon my return to the US, I looked for something similar, but never did find it. For those traveling to the US from countries that have this product available, I would recommend forgetting about orange…unless you want to drink orange juice. Instead, drink tap water or bottled water. If you want flavor, pick up some lemon juice concentrate from the grocer, and add a sprinkle. Or if you really want to get crazy, add a lot, and then some sugar and you've got a very descent homemade lemonade. Last, I found a pretty descent recipe for homemade orange squash, located here: http://www.just-coffe...range-squash-recipe/. Good luck and happy travels!
