And attacking player is running with the ball.

He fumbles it (unintentionally)

It goes forwards

Before it hits the ground, he catches it again, and runs on.

Is it a knock on?

Is it a forward pass?

Or does the referee allow play to continue?

When I used to play, it was a knock on, but that was back in the days of black and white telly.

These days, it's OK.
As long as it doesn't touch the ground in all that fumbling then the referee will allow play to continue.

Ooh ... clever !!

Yes. If the player doesn't throw it forwards on purpose, and doesn't lose possession, and it doesn't touch the floor ...

... then he can play on.

It took some finding, but I'm sure you really wanted to know:

DEFINITION - KNOCK ON
A knock on occurs when a player loses possession of the ball and it goes forward, or when a player hits the ball forward with the hand or arm, or when the ball hits the hand or arm and goes forward, and the ball touches the ground or another player before the original player can
catch it.

Forward means towards the opposing teams dead ball line.

Looks good to me.
couldn't be a forward pass as a pass is only when it goes to another player. Might constitute a throw forward if intentional.
Question Author
jno, that's true.

You guys are good.

It's much better here than in the Football section.
