when the smoking ban came in my mate was all for it, great he says, but what about when the smokers stay out of the pubs and clubs and you are sat on your own ? never happen says he. you wait and see people will start staying in , not everybody wants to go outside in the cold and wet for a smoke.

New Years Eve, are you coming , great band on , no says me see you next year mate. six of them go out all have a ticket, guess how many were in the pub/club new years eve

total of 8 , six were in my mates party , the band were excellent and cost the lanlord 1000. he now thinks landlords should have a choice if they have a smoking room.

You can't blame it entirely on the smoking ban - after all, smokers still fly abroad, stuck in a plane without a fag for hours.

Many people either don't want to or can't pay 3 or more for one drink, plus the cost of the taxi home, especially NYE, and find they have a better time at home, with friends.

And then there's the trouble. It is no fun watching drunks get aggressive, or throwing up.

Hey DrF :-)

Yes, it does make you wonder how many of those calling for the smoking ban in public places are now regularly using those public places now that they're smoke free.

No I agree with DrFilth. I haven't been in a pub since the smoking ban came in, apart from sitting outside in the summer. I don't see why I should pay for drinks at pub prices and have to go outside, often in the pi**ing rain to have a fag. My friends are more than happy (including non-smokers) to come along to my house, top up my drinks cupboard, and have a good time with no-one being thrown out for having a drag of the evil (but still legal) weed.

Boo i bet that pub my mate was in new years eve is shut soon

I dont think you can blame the credit crunch on lack of business in pubs at all. We've had recessions in the past- pibs still did a roaring trade then.
I'm a huge anti-smoker.. I hate it.

but I wouldn't have a problem if some pubs still allowed smoking. I'd just go to a non-smoking one.
Totally agree DrF.

I still remember those folks clamouring for the smoking ban in pubs, stating they'd now go their local. How many have on a regular basis eh?
There is a pub in York called the Tap and Spile which had always had a non-smoking room. This was my local from work and over the 30 odd years going in there I can never remember seeing anyone in that room!
And yet when I go to my local pub it is very busy - they provide decent meals during the day, and entertainment 4 nights a week. The darts and domino teams are still going strong.

Working men's clubs have been dying the death for years. 30 years ago there must have been 10 within a short distance of my home, 5 years ago there were 2. We still have the Miners' Institute.

In that same time there have been 3 golf courses with active club houses, and countless gyms and leisure centres, most with bars, within easy distance.

The times they are a-changing.

The times they are a-changing, but pubs can't be doing too badly - Wetherspoons are opening 5 new pubs soon, and the city nightclubs are still doing well
Oops -double posted, but my last point was pubs aren't doing too badly with Wetherspoons opening 5 new pubs, and the nightclubs are still very busy
In my local even the non smokers end up sitting outside as that's where all the fun is....with the smokers.
I have nothing against smokers. They have every right to smoke in their own home. However they should not inflict their filthy addictive drug on everyone else.

Our streets are littered with the remains of their discarded hits. Addicts assume it is their right to infuse the air breathed by others with their drug.

Smoking in public should be absolutely banned. No exceptions.

Driving under the influence of tobacco should also be illegal.
"under the influence of tobacco"....Eh?
beso - driving under the influence of tobacco? it doesnt influence your judgement lol
