Maradona/Henry
Maradona, at the time of the 'Hand of God' goal was the best player on the planet, yet for me his whole career is defined by that one incident of blatant cheating.
Indeed, when anybody talks about Maradona on the TV, the cheating incident is always mentioned.
So, will Henry's career also be defined by his blatant piece of cheating that cheated Ireland out of a World Cup slot?
It will for me.

The job of the players is to optimise the game within the laws and this is an example of that, ie he got away with it. Now the authorities should have a way of redressing the balance in games of this importance a bit like they do in other sports eg deduct points like they do in motor sport.
Yes Flip-fop I think Henry will be haunted with this, like Maradonought before him

Nobody should be surprised at last night’s antics (which I have not actually seen, but only heard about on Radio 4 this morning). Neither should anybody should single out M. Henry for criticism as the entire game (at least at top level, and probably elsewhere as what the “stars” do tends to rub off) is riddled with cheats. If what I have heard is true it is simply the latest in a long series of similar incidents which reduce the game to ridicule.
When I have been bothered to comment on football on AB (which is not that often) I have suggested that it is a tedious game with an unusually high incidence of cheats among its participants. This incident confirms my belief.
M. Henry’s attitude is that it is perfectly acceptable for him to cheat and it is the referee’s job to spot his misdemeanours. How anybody can be bothered (let alone pay) to watch a game when one of its senior players adopts such an attitude (and he is by no means alone) is quite beyond me.

New Judge.....well you certainly got that off your chest and I must say that I have some sympathy with your comments.
However....facts.
1) Henry didn't mean to "cheat".....it was an accident.........I think.
2) Professional sport is about winning and media financial support.
3) Should he have gone to the referee and say " Non goal ref, I handled it"
4) Would the French supporters say " Well done Theirry you are a good sport.....I doubt it.
5) In the world today there are winners, losers and neither winners or losers.
6) Luck will be with you one day, but another day it will be against you.
Yes Judge........I am a pragmatist. I also feel sorry for the Irish.
There is a saying in Surgery....."It is better to be a lucky surgeon than a good one" ;-)

I hate him too.
I know that Irish were not too worried by the Maradona handball ... but that was years ago!
The World Cup would be more jolly with the Irish than with the French.
Thierry Henry's image is forever tarnished ... and rightly so, the cheating git.
There must be a replay.
The World Cup is a total farce if France get in like this.
Bl00dy frogs. Garlic breath w@nkers. Cheats.

Well, sqad, others have the advantage over me as I have not seen the incident (nor have I any intention of seeking it out). However, from what I have heard there seems no doubt that the ball was handled, and not much doubt that it was done so intentionally.
M. Henry’s carefully crafted statement did not accept cheating, but in my book a player who deliberately commits an act so clearly contrary to the laws of the game, and particularly one which led to a decisive goal being scored, is a cheat.
In most games (but with some notable exceptions) players try to exploit the rules to the limit, and there is nothing wrong with that. However, in football there are so many controversial incidents where players try to gain a significant advantage not necessarily by exploiting or breaking the rules, but by deceiving the officials (and I am thinking particularly of “diving”) that I simply cannot believe that they are all accidental, or bad luck, or unintentional.

And to address some of your points:
“1) Henry didn't mean to "cheat".....it was an accident.........I think.”
As I say, I have not seen it, but consensus seems to be that it was intentional – and that’s cheating.
“2) Professional sport is about winning and media financial support.”
Yes it is, but it should not be at a price which subjects the game to ridicule
“3) Should he have gone to the referee and say " Non goal ref, I handled it"
Yes he should have. The fact that this is not routinely done only supports my argument that players will cheat if they think they can get away with it.
“4) Would the French supporters say " Well done Theirry you are a good sport.....I doubt it.”
You’d be surprised. I most certainly would say so if it was an English player. As you can imagine, I do not like football (mainly for the reasons discussed here) but I admire good sportsmanship in any game and would applaud any player who acted honourably. Better to have lost having obeyed the rules, than to have won by deceiving the officials.
