Over the years watching football matches I have noticed members of the crowd with banners with 'John 3:16' written on them. I assume this is a reference to the passage in the Bible, but not sure how this relates to football. Any ideas?
I'm not sure that it does. It's considered to be the summary of God's relationship with humanity. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life". Just people declaring their faith?
I used to wonder that, I think it may be a cunning theist trick.
I think I'll pen my own sign something along the lines of Collin's English dictionary page ???, ??entry and make it a rude word.
I remember these banners first came to prominence during the 1986 Mexico World Cup Finals and during a light-hearted review of the tournament - all the funnies, howlers etc, the programee finished with a voice-over saying, "And finally, did John ever catch the 3:16 and where was he going?"
