Following on from Bobbi's thread, which do you think are the most 'stirring' and 'wimpiest' national anthems? My choices, in order, are the French and the Canadian. As an addon, I think the Australians should have adopted 'Waltzing Matilda" as theirs.

Wimpiest....."Flowers of Scotland"
Stirring....Russian National Anthem.
Flower of Scotland is not actually a national anthem.
Ooops! sorry.
I can't make out some of the National anthems, I like the Welsh one but some of the obscure african ones sound strange and go on forever.

I've never heard it, but I'd put the Russian one in the 'top five'.

I meant to say I've never heard the Scottish tune.
Rise o voices of Rhodesia - music - Ode to joy - words brilliant

Stirring and tear jerking (for personal reasons) Russian

Wimpiest Our very own

But the one that makes me feel happy is definitely the Italian one.
Ummmm can you explain that please? Not arguing I just thought it was as voted for by the people.
sorry that should be for the most stirring - as for the wimpiest have to admit if I don't know the tune or words, most foreign NA sound wimpy to me.

Carmalee, isn't that Beethoven's Ninth? Sort of musical plagiarism.
"I'm gonna be" is the Scottish national anthem. It was played for the Pope yesterday, you could see him tapping his feet.
I would much prefer Land of Hope and Glory to the dirge we have now
:o)

it is indeed Stewey - wonderful piece of music and as you've probably gathered I spent time in Rhodesia and well remember the national competition that was organised to find our new NA during the 70's
Lofty...sensational.

Any of you remember the scene from "55 Days To Peking" where all the major powers are playing their anthems at the same time?
