How is it that England has won the Ashes 2-1 when there is still one more match to play?

they retain the ashes, as Australia now can't win them

Australia has them at the moment, so if they win the next match it will be a draw, (a void series), so why couldn't they keep them?
because australia can't win them
AOG...we, England have the Ashes and have retained them.
A drawn series results in the previous holders retaining the Ashes.
englandshire were last winners so a draw in the series is enough to retain them

Thanks for all your answers, what threw me was the sporting pundits were saying how long it had been since we gained the ashes, so I automatically thought the Aussies had them.
What they meant was that it was the last time we "RETAINED" the Ashes!!
