MSN Messenger Network problem

Can anyone help me after so much problems installing windows xp and a network msn and windows messenger which i use begrudgingly, will not work as soon as i click 'sign in' it freezes, I then when i send the error report get sent to a Microsoft page which tells me the problems is because of a Firewall or spy ware however with all firewalls turned off and several programs used to search for spy ware i have had no difference in the programs behavior. I have also found that windows update will not work either it will start to load up and then hang. thanks in advance

defragment your computer, and run an error scan. you can do this by going into my computer, right clicking C:/ and clicking tools.

WARNING: error scan takes long time and should be run when computer is not needed
