Text boxes invisible in Dreamweaver 8

I'm designing a website in Dreamweaver 8. I want to put one or two simple little text boxes on a page and I manage to do it fine, in Dreamweaver, but when I check how it looks in a browser (I'm using Firefox) it just shows the bare text, no text box. Why's that?

I've tried making a test page with virtually nothing else on it and the text box IS visible. So I guess there's something on the page that's causing this to happen. But when I strip out everything from the page I'm working on except the containing divs, and put in a text box, the same thing happens - the text is visible but not the box.

Anyone got any ideas what might be causing this?
