AVG "rogue?" susbscription renewal
7 Answers
Does anyone know about a scam/trojan/virus or similar that happens regarding renewal of an antivirus subscription? I ask because this AVG box comes up on mine telling me how long I have before the sub runs out (which is correct), however, one cannot close the box, nor does it have "renew later" on it, I actually have to shut my pc down to get rid of the box.
My AVG interface has three new icons on it that since I clicked on an update box a couple of weeks ago (after which the rogue remewal box started coming up at certain times - every few days). One is Family Security, another is LikeKive both of which are saying "activate". The third icon is PC Analysis which says needs doing, but when I right click on it says, "ignore component status". I feel all three and the rogue renewal box are linked but not sure about any of it.
AVG techies don';t seem to have the answer atm so I just wondered if anyone else has experienced the same problem or know about it at all.
Many thanks in advance for your replies.

It sounds weird. I thing either you have an malware infection or maybe somethig is corrupted. One application incident I could shrug and leave, but you say you have a number of applications opening up renewal boxes.
It may pay you to go to one of the anti-virus supplier sites, and run a free Net scan from there, to see if there is anything AVG hasn't picked up. Also there are a number of malware scanning apps, such as malwarebytes, that it would be useful to install and scan your PC with.

Hi Albags and OG
Thanks for your replies. I did a Housecall full scan today and it found 17 trojans (scream) Agent AVI and one generic trojan they said was a suspicious file. It fixed the 17 trojans and ignored the generic one...so I googled that and it looked at it on AVG database but I couldn't find out what it is nor how to get rid of it.
I will download and run Malwarebytes in a day or so and do another Housecall to check it all out. The problem is, even though it might clear everything I'm rather loathe to renew my subscription which runs out in 12 days time just in case something else comes in with it. This is a nightmare for me as I'm no expert by any means so I only have limited experience in "fixing" things but I do try the best I can.
It's so annoying that people do these things, I never know what enjoyment they get out of messing other people's computer up....they could be using their expertise to such good things but choose the alternative. Crazy world we live in and spoilt by some awful people out there.
Thanks for your help.

The ‘due for renewal box’ is normal if you have a paid for version of AVG.
Why don’t you download AVG Free?
The three new icons are optional components to buy.
New AVG Family Safety Educates your kids as they explore, protects while they socialize, and adapts as they grow. Ignore it.
AVG LiveKive is a new service that copies all your files, photos, and music and saves them to a remote server via a secure Internet connection to prevent them from being lost or stolen. Ignore it.
PC Analyzer is a new component which will scan your PC and report errors that affect its performance. Ignore it.

Thanks SP. The rogue box I referred to came up separate from my usual renewal and I could not get it to go, there was no renew later and I could not close it even from task manager it just would not go so I knew it was something sinister which it has proved to be as AVG techies couldn't tell me what it was. I wouldn't have the free one because I've heard from some techies it's not as good and one doesn't get email and phone support with the free one as I found out today when I rang their freephone number to speak to someone. Thanks for your advice though.
Hi OG, no it isn't clean and still having problems with the "rogue box" coming up for renewal and then having to close PC down because there's no way it will close. I did Housecall scan and it picked up lots of Agent AVG trojans (my AVG didn't!) and one it wouldn't get rid of YSIGNU~1.EXE but I can't even find it in my files... The firewall still has the AVGINSTALLEDAPPX.EXE on it with allow for all and I have a feeling this is part of the problem.... I'm emailing AVG support but they won't tell me what the files are nor the screen shot of the "rogue box" or what to do. My subs run out in 7 days so I will have to uninstall the blessed thing and try another AV.....
Oh I downloaded Malwarebytes too and it found this - KEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\C
urrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A
4DF-000874180BB3}
(Trojan.Agent) and that's in quarantine...apart from that I don't know what to do <scream>
Being a technophobe doesn't help me but I'm doing the best I can.
