My laptop is going very slowly lately

and Internet Explorer has not been responding on and off for a while. I've looked at the control panel (not sure what to do) and I've found that Windows defender is turned off I can't seem to turn it back on. The last programme I installed was malwarebytes. Any suggestions anyone.

Open Task Manager and try to look through processes .. look at highest memory usages items first. Browser will be there now, and numerous other small memory entries.
Ctrl/Alt/Del together .. for XP You on XP?
