broadband internet speed

I have Broadband from Tiscali, �15.99. The speed is 589.8kbps. Is that good or is there somewhere out there faster, cheaper and as reliable?

There are other factors, and from my limited experience I would say under no circumstances accept a capped service. The war is on just now and it's very much a buyer's market.

You could move to their 2mb service. For the same price you are limited to 3gb per month, which is more than enough for me.

Most ISPs are offering speeds upto 2MB however, this seems to be a lottery. I can only get a 1MB service, someone else about a mile from me can get the 2MB service.

The speed you can get through your phone line depends upon how far you are from the exchange.

I can get 2.3mb on my 2mb service, but I am only about 100m from the exchange :-)

alan47 you have my condolences, Tiscali are the ISP from hell, avoid like the plague.. I wouldn't wish tiscali on my worst enemy. You would be far better paying a few extra quid for another ISP. You may have good speed at times but I am on 512kb ADSL and mine varies from 230 - 430 on average. Tiscali do not support migration.. once they have you it's diffucult to leave them. Read the reviews on http://www.net4nowt.com on their 512kb adsl service.  Also see this website http://www.ispreview.co.uk/new/complain/complain.shtml and that is only a drop in the ocean of the complaints about tiscali. Call centre in India is a waste of space, they hang up on you or can't understand english.. they are not computer techs, but computer monkeys reading off a script. Billing dept is useless too.. customer service sucks.. even the dept in Milton Keynes. They are cheap but you get a cheap service, false promises, incompetence and lies. If I can prevent just one person going to tiscali than I will have done something good. Tiscali are the worst ISP.. AVOID !!

I've had ADSL for 5 yrs. I was with worldonline and tiscali took them over, I'm being charged �26.99 a month for 512kb adsl .. that's at least �7 more than new customers on tiscali 512 adsl. I was promised upgrades from my old package to a new package of 1mb, told the price would be sorted.. all lies !! I was then told to they cannot do anything and I'm having to cancel my account.. they said after 15 - 18 days I can reconnect on their tiscali 512 adsl. I've looked at other adsl ISP's but Tiscali do not support migration.. I will have to wait 7 days minimum for them to clear the line before I can go to another ISP. (I will have to use a no ties dial up for a while). Tiscali have a habit of not collecting payments for months, then billing you for several hundred pounds or send debt collectors around. They are the most complained about ISP, oftel know about them. Don't touch Tiscali with a bargepole the length of the M1.

I have ADSL 512 from www.supanet.com and its great. �19.97 a month and no limits.

I wouldn't use Tiscali or AOL if they were paying ME!
