How big is your hard drive and what do you have on it? If there is programs you have put on it that you don't use anymore uninstall them. You may have many photos or music files saved you don't realy need to keep. Delete them. If all the data on your lap top is stuff you want to keep and you want to store a lot more the best thing to do is buy an external hard drive, plug it in your computer and move all the old stuff to it you don't use but still want to keep and that will free space on your main laptop hard drive. you can then unplug the external drive with your old files saved and put it away in a safe place until you want to use it again.
Some hard drives are divided up into C and D. You MAY have an empty D drive sitting on your hard disk.
You could start saving files to your D drive (if you have one) or move personal; files from C to D.
Note D could also be your CD/DVD drive so you need to check if D really is on your hard disk and if it is empty.

Windows creates all sorts of files "under the covers" without you having to do anything, and these can be quite large.
For example Windows takes a "restore point" every so often and saves these on your hard disk. Try turning OFF system restore, so it deletes all the old restore points, then turn it on again, and you will have only one, saving you space. Also reduce amount of disk space used by System Restore.
Windows also create a hibernation file for when your laptop goes into hibernation and this file is quite large.
If you dont use hibernation you can turn hibernation off and delete the large hibernation file.

Also make sure you empty your recylce bin. When you delete a file it is put in your recycle bin (so still on your hard disk taking up space). Emoty it and it may get you more space.

btw. It is VERY important there is space on your hard disk (much more than 5Gb).
Windows needs space to store temporary files, and if it has not got the space Windows can grind to a halt.
Can you find out how big your hard disk is?
Also how big C is (and how much free space) and if you have any other areas on your disk like D and how big it is and how much space there is on it.
