If you get the same result with another monitor, you might need to adjust the video driver settings. The route to getting at them will vary slightly depending upon your version of Windows and the graphics driver which you've got but here's how I get to mine:
Start > Settings > Control Panel
Double-click 'Display'
Click 'Settings' (tab)
Click 'Advanced'
Click 'Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver' (tab) - look for something roughly similar on your PC.
Click 'Graphics Properties'
Click 'Display Settings'
Click 'Advanced Settings'
Using the 'Basic' and 'Colour tabs, adjust the sliders to get the image you desire
Click the 'Close' (X) button.
Click 'Apply'
Click 'OK' in each box as you get back to your desktop.
