I've bought 2x2 gigs of memory for my laptop which only had 1 gig installed. The first one is recognised but the second one isn't. I've definitely fitted them both correctly so don't know what can be wrong. Can anyone help me?

You could try swapping them round and see if the result is the same
are you sure it should be able to see 4GB of RAM?
Question Author
I thought of that too but unfortunately can't get the first one out now and am loath to force it.
Question Author
Yes scotman - it will take 8 gig
In that case maybe the 2nd one isn't quite in properly
Question Author
I've tried taking it out and putting it back four times now but the result is still the same. The first one is fine on it's own.
Sorry Felly, in that case, I don't know the answer

Thanks all. There is a Technical Support number I can ring. In the instructions it actually says to ring if "Your system is recognising only half of the new module's memory" so it looks like I'll have to do that. I'm not keen as I'm not very up to date with technology and have trouble understanding what they are asking me sometimes :(
I just had my ancient PC upgraded by a pal from the boozer. The computer was a cheap end-of-line model that I got from PC World back in 2003. This pal of mine stuck a new motherboard in it with a bee's knees processor and oodles of RAM with a hard drive the size of a house. It was working fine round at his drum but when I got it home it wouldn't boot up properly. Turned out it didn't like one of the bits of RAM so I took it out and it now works perfect. Sorry, I'm no techie, the RAM it didn't like was the big one with flashing lights on it. I'm saving that for my xmas tree now in December. I would put it on ebay but don't know how to describe it.

Your ram with the flashing leds? Was it Crucial memory, they had quite a few problems with these and if my memory serves me well you could send it back to Crucial for a free replacement.

I rang Crucial about this problem and the chap I spoke to couldn't have been more helpful. He suggested all the things I had already tried so we didn't manage to solve the problem over the phone. The conclusion we came to was that I wasn't strong enough to push the second module in far enough. However afterwards I was thinking over all the information he had given me and decided to try putting the second module in first and trying to slide the first one in underneath and voila it worked :)
