Dongle connection problems

Using the dongle on PC has been fine until this morning.

It will get to 4.99kB and disconnected itself. The message shows up as 'Cannot connect check no other application is using this' or words to that effect. Have run disc clean-up. Am using the dongle on son's laptop to ask this so to give the correct wording would take for ever, so forgive me please.
Any helpful suggestions would be most welcome.
