but there is a problem at the moment, people are taking weeks for their new avatars to show up on AB.

It's explained in here somewhere in detail but can't find it.

You need to register with gravatar and make sure the email address is the same there as is for AB.
It's been having a few hiccups over the past couple of weeks.

I changed mine 0n 17/11, and although the new one shows in my profile, all my posts still show the old one. So don't hold your breath...
