DVD drive on laptop not working

My husband 's laptop is running on Vista.For some reason we cannot get the cd/dvd driver to work.I have downloaded a pack from Microsoft but that has not helped.
Any ideas please ?

There is an obscure registry setting for the drive that can stop the drive working. The drive still appears in the Device Manager but refuses to work. Deleting the registry key fixes it.

Sorry I can't remember the exact details but it is Max-something. I will try to remember and post back if I can.
It's the upper and lower filters.

I clicked on the link and followed the instrcutions.However,when I typed "regedit" into the Search I had no results

Ah yes. Chuck has it.

I still don't know what those settings are supposed to do or what changes to make them cause a problem.

It seems odd to just delete a registry key to fix something. I imagine there are not many things that would be fixed like that.
