Which format for Office 2010 Word

I have just installed Microsoft Office 2010 and am being asked whether I want to set the Default to open files as;

Office Open XML

or

Open Documents format

Which should I choose? I know that when I used Open Office version of Word which I have now uninstalled some friends could not open the letters I sent and don't want to choose the wrong setting.

I realise you have probably sorted this now but if not, go for the Open Documents Format. This will ensure compatability with ALL Open Office type programmes, as well as Microsoft Office.

Thank you, Just found your reply...... unfortunately someone else advised the other option....how can I change this please?

I have tried to send a word doc. to my friends but some could not open it until I saved it again as 'Word 97 to 2003' or some such option and sent it again!
