What are GB and MB in my PC?

Could someone please explain to me about MB and GB in my PC.

My laptop is 80 GB HDD...I assume that is hard drive.

Now I have been having trouble playing games...wll suddenly freeze and go black.

I am now wondering if I don`t have enough hard drive space ..I have 3.83GB available space in C drive.does this mean I don`t have enough for a game which requires 87MB?

They are both a measure of capacity to store information on a computer. 1GB is equal to 1024MB.

But that's pretty irrelevant to your question. nearly 4GB of spare hard drive space is getting low, but it's not low enough to cause problems yet.

you've given no information at all about what game it is, but any laptop with only an 80GB hard drive is going to be pretty old and may not be up to playing the game.

However.... updating the graphics drivers to the latest ones would be worth a go.

You may have seen my post regards to purchasing a new laptop...the biggest I find is 8GB with 750GB Harddrive so you are saying 8GB is obsolete??????
Could you please point mwe the way to updating my graphics driver.By the way,not all games freeze on me,only one or two.

I think Chuck was equating the fact that any computer with a hard drive of 80GB would have comparatively little memory compared to today's computers as these things go pretty much hand in hand, so only a memory of 1GB or even less perhaps, which might not be enough to play a modern game well.

Looking at one of your other posts your current laptop apparently has only 512MB memory which is certainly going to be your problem when playing games, this is only half a GB (near enough) so only one sixteenth as much as the 8GB laptop you mentioned earlier.

ChuckFickens was suggesting that an 80 GB hard drive is most likely to indicate an older laptop so it is even more likely that the graphics section of the mother board and the main processor will not cope with the demands of some of the more modern games. Games do not always expect the maximum of ones system all the time, which is why some games appear fine and others do not. It is unlikely that updating the drivers will help that much, but you could try going to Control panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/display. Then right clicking the items there and try updating the drivers from there. Good luck.

•2.1GHz processor speed.
•4GB DDR3 RAM memory.
•500GB SATA hard drive.

This is going to be better than my present laptop isn`t it?
I do not understand all these GB`s .MB`s etc.
What memory will the above mentioned have?

You can, more or less, forget about MB (megabytes). These days, both RAM (memory) and hard disk (storage space) tend to be measured in GB (gigabytes).

The usual analogy I use is a writing desk and a filing cabinet - the writing desk is the PC's RAM and the filing cabinet is the PC's hard disk. In order for you to work on a document, you need to get it out of your filing cabinet and open it on your writing desk. Clearly, the bigger the writing desk, the more documents you can have open at the same time, and the bigger the filing cabinet, the more documents you can store there waiting to be be opened on the writing desk whenever you need to work on them.

Some applications don't need much memory. Others, especially modern games, require lots. The machine that you describe in your latest post should be fine for playing games, though you don't mention the specifications of its graphics card, which can sometimes be a factor.

But I'd be more worried about seeing the word "Celeron" mentioned in the specs.

My 6 year old laptop is a Sony Vaio with a Centrino Duo Core processor...still working ok but not suitable for playing all games.

So any advice on which processor to look for...within reasonable price.

Another question,as I have said in another posting,when I play some games the screen freezes and goes black....sometimes things go very big as well

Will this harm my laptop?
