Manually moving photos in a file

I have recently bought a new laptop with Windows 7, and after transferring my files over I now cannot reorganise my photos manually - on my old computer when I clicked and held down on the photo and then dragged it a black line appeared to indicate where I was going to move it to, but that is no longer an option.

Any suggestions?

It maybe my own inexperience, but this black line & dragging is not something I recognise. Did you have an application running that allowed you to view/arrange the files like that, which you don't have in Windows 7 ?

You can't.

The ability to switch off auto arrange in folders has been removed from windows7, it can only be turned off on the desktop now.

Wow. Never had Vista, must have missed it wasn't a desktop only thing in XP.

One long term answer could be to give each a title or number, and sort by that (if you want to insert number 7, say, between nos. 22 and 23, simply renumber it 22a.)

seems somewhat lacking...is there not a new system coming soon?..I can move mine around just fine !!!..glad I did not succumb to Vista...but may need to upgrade soon !

It's not really lacking, it just unifies the ordering.

XP caused people to order files how they wanted them in one folder and then they'd wonder why the files seemed to suddenly change order when they were copied to a different location or new media..

In later versions the order of the files will always be consistent across all media because you can only sort them by the predefined criteria (name, date, size etc etc...)
