I think there should be a reset button on the modem but you need to know the default password for it so you can set the whole thing up from scratch. Check on the router itself, mine has a sticker on the bottom with default settings. Oh and the reset button is one of those ones you have to poke a pen into a hole to reach it.
^^^ mine's exactly the same with sticker underneath.
Connect your laptop to the modem/router using a lan cable - you won't need a password for that.

Then you can go into the modem/router settings via the laptop and reset the wifi password.
My wireless settings are on a little plastic card.................why would you ever change your router password?
craft, when I bought my wireless router many years ago I had to create my own password and have reset it many times since then, changing the password along the way.

What make/model is it? There should be a reset button somewhere, maybe it is one of those pinhole ones where you have to stick a pin in and hold for 10 seconds.
Your new laptop is most likely WiFI version N and it should be backwards compatitable to your modem router which is more likely to be B or G . As it fairly old you may require a firmware update from the manufacturer to bring it up to date.
